SSC CHSL Reasoning: Analogy, Series and Coding-Decoding Practice
Reasoning practice is an important part of preparing for SSC CHSL. Questions on analogy, series and coding-decoding test the ability to identify relationships, recognise patterns and apply logical rules.
Candidates should practise these topics regularly, understand the logic behind each answer and improve accuracy before increasing speed.
The exact examination structure should always be checked in the latest SSC CHSL notification.

1. Analogy Questions
Analogy questions ask candidates to identify a relationship between two items and apply the same relationship to another pair.
Example 1
Book : Reading :: Pen : ?
- A. Drawing
- B. Writing
- C. Walking
- D. Running
Answer: B. Writing
Explanation: A book is used for reading, while a pen is used for writing.
Example 2
Bird : Nest :: Bee : ?
- A. Den
- B. Hive
- C. Stable
- D. Burrow
Answer: B. Hive
Explanation: A nest is a bird’s home, and a hive is associated with bees.
How to solve analogy questions
- Identify the exact relationship in the first pair.
- Check whether the relationship is based on function, category, part-whole or another logical connection.
- Apply the same relationship to the second pair.
- Avoid selecting an answer based only on similar-looking words.
2. Number Series Questions
Number series questions require you to identify the pattern connecting successive numbers.
Example 1: Find the next number: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, ?
Answer: 64
Explanation: Each number is multiplied by 2.
Example 2: Find the next number: 5, 9, 13, 17, ?
Answer: 21
Explanation: Each successive number increases by 4.
Example 3: Find the next number: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, ?
Answer: 36
Explanation: These are consecutive square numbers (1², 2², 3², 4², 5²), so the next is 6² = 36.
Tips for number series
Check the differences between consecutive terms first. If the differences are not constant, examine multiplication, division, squares, cubes or alternating patterns.
Do not assume a pattern without checking whether it explains all the given terms.
3. Alphabet Series
Alphabet series questions use the order of letters in the English alphabet.
Example: Find the next letter: A, C, E, G, ?
Answer: I
Explanation: Every second letter is selected, moving forward by two alphabet positions.
Practise alphabet positions and reverse alphabet positions to solve these questions efficiently.
4. Coding-Decoding Questions
Coding-decoding questions use a rule to transform letters, numbers or words.
Example 1: Letter Shift — If CAT is coded as DBU, how is DOG coded using the same rule?
Answer: EPH
D becomes E, O becomes P, G becomes H. Each letter moves forward by one position.
Example 2: Reverse Alphabet — If A is coded as Z, B as Y and C as X, how is DOG coded?
Answer: WLT
D becomes W, O becomes L, G becomes T. Each letter is replaced by its reverse-alphabet counterpart.

How to Prepare Reasoning for SSC CHSL
- Learn one reasoning topic at a time.
- Solve basic examples before attempting difficult questions.
- Practise 20–30 questions daily as a starting target.
- Record incorrect answers and understand the logic.
- Attempt timed practice sets.
- Revise previously studied question types.
- Use reliable previous-year questions and mock tests.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Which reasoning topics should SSC CHSL candidates practise?
Analogy, series, coding-decoding and other topics included in the applicable syllabus should be practised systematically.
Q2. How can I solve number series questions faster?
Start by checking differences, then test multiplication, division, squares and alternating patterns. Practise regularly and avoid guessing.
Q3. Are reasoning shortcuts necessary?
Shortcuts can save time, but understanding the underlying logic is more important.
